About This Retreat

As a virtual at home retreat, this is an opportunity to deepen into mindfulness practice and explore what it means to awaken in each embodied moment of our often challenging, chaotic and beautifully sacred lives as women. Join a diverse community of women from around the globe and experience meditation practice in a way that honors the intuitive and embodied aspects of the journey.  Through mindful movement, stillness, silence and connection, our team of seasoned teachers, all trained in both mindfulness meditation and embodied awakening practices (such as yoga and qigong), will create a nourishing retreat container to slow down, reconnect with the wisdom of your body and return home to your heart. Collectively we will support and empower each other on this journey of becoming more fully grounded, spacious, and responsive in our day to day lives.  All those who identify as women are welcome.

Retreat Features

Large Group Retreat Meeting

A daily meeting where everyone on the retreat will get together for a daily teaching plus practice and/or small group work. The large group community meeting marks the both the beginning of each new day of the retreat, so is an important common point of reference as we practice together across timezones.

Small Group Practice Meetings

At least once each day, you will be joining a group of dedicated peers, and a retreat teacher, to engage in group practice. These sessions will give you a chance to practice along with the retreat curriculum, and ask practice related questions. These sessions will be offered at a number of times throughout the day, and you’ll be able to see which teachers & times are available before registering for the retreat.

Peer-Led Practice Sessions

Throughout each day of the retreat there will be 30-minute silent peer-led practice sessions offered. These silent peer-led sessions give retreatants ample opportunity to engage in supportive group practice. You can even help host them, taking even deeper ownership for the continuity of practice on this retreat.

Private Teacher Meetings

During a Mindfulness Retreat Online you'll have the option to schedule a 20-minute private session with a retreat teacher.  You can use this meeting to check-in about how the retreat is going, ask any questions that you have, and get general support from a skilled guide.

Mindfulness Retreat Network

Each retreat is offered through our Mindfulness Retreats Network.  Here, you’ll be able to find a detailed schedule for your retreat, along with recorded talks and supplementary learning material from the retreat teachers.  In addition, once the retreat is live, this network is where you’ll find the event information you’ll need to join the live peer-led practice sessions.

Meet Your Teachers

  • Kate Johnson

    Kate Johnson is a meditation teacher, facilitator, author and mama who leads classes and retreats integrating spirituality, social justice and creativity. A passionate meditator since her early 20’s, Kate is authorized as an independent Buddhist meditation teacher through Spirit Rock’s 4 year teacher training. As an organizational consultant, she has trained hundreds of leaders and change-makers to use embodied, awareness-based approaches to systemic transformation. She holds a BFA in Modern Dance from the Alvin Ailey School and MA in Performance Studies from NYU. Her first book, Radical Friendship, will be published in May 2021.

  • Anne Cushman

    Anne Cushman is MMTCP’s Director of Mentoring and a pioneer in the integration of mindfulness, embodied meditation, and creative writing. A practitioner of dharma and yoga for over 35 years, she is the author of the memoir The Mama Sutra, the novel Enlightenment for Idiots, the mindful yoga manifesto Moving Into Meditation, and the India pilgrimage guide From Here to Nirvana; and her essays on spiritual practice in daily life have been widely published. A member of the Teachers’ Council at Spirit Rock Meditation Center, she leads regular meditation retreats with a focus on creativity, embodiment, and daily life practice.

  • Janice Gates

    Janice Gates has been teaching the integration of meditation, mindfulness and embodied practice for over 25 years, including at Spirit Rock Meditation Center, UC Berkeley, San Quentin Prison and in businesses and retreat centers around the globe. She began practicing Vipassana meditation and yoga while living in Asia in 1988 and her teaching is influenced by Theravada and Tibetan Buddhism, her studies in somatic practices, the psychospiritual work of Jennifer Welwood and many years of falling down and getting back up! Janice currently works as a teacher, mentor, coach and facilitator and is most interested in how these teachings can support our down-on-the-ground daily lives and relationships.

  • Imee Contreras

    Imee first discovered meditation when she was 16 years old, around the time when she faced one of the most impactful crossroads in her life.  She spent a large part of her younger years growing up in the United States and is now based in her motherland; The Philippines.  After decades of searching, she discovered a true sense of belonging in nature, motherhood, yoga therapy, meditation practice and the BuddhaDharma. She works in Buddhist, secular, and cross-cultural settings that intertwine harmoniously within the mindfulness field.  She believes that everything belongs when exploring one’s own mind and heart.  Hence, it takes courageous and compassionate enthusiasm to meet ourselves fully.  She loves engaging in relaxed, meaningful conversations that build relationships and cultivate connection. She is the founder of Mindfulness Asia and a co-founder of Philippine Insight Meditation Community.  She is a mentor for Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach's MMTCP at Sounds True, an authorized teacher at UCLA's Mindful Awareness Research Center, a Cross-Cultural Mindfulness Teacher and Board Member of Braided Wisdom, and a visiting teacher at East Bay Meditation Center.  She graduated from Spirit Rock's Community Dharma Leadership Program and is an IMTA-Certified Mindfulness Teacher. She develops and facilitates mindfulness programs for companies, schools, and events; both locally and internationally.  She volunteers to teach incarcerated women serving life imprisonment and also supports abused women and children in the Philippines.

Each day of the retreat we will all gather together for the Large Group Community Meeting.

This meeting goes from 6:00 – 8:00pm EST.

Small Group Times

Small practice group times will be offered throughout the day and will also vary depending on the retreat. In general, we aim to offer small group times to accommodate people living in most time zones around the world, though this retreat schedule is optimized for North America, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is your refund policy?

No refunds will be given for the $100 registration fee.  Transferring your registration to another retreat may be possible, but it's completely at the discretion of the Buddhist Geeks Team.

Am I guaranteed a small group meeting time?

You are guaranteed at least one small group meetings per day, but please look above to see which small groups are open before registering, so that you can ensure that you'll find a small group time that works for you.

Are there small groups available that work for people living everywhere in the world?

All retreats will have plenty of workable options for small group meetings.  The large group community meeting will work for those living in North America, South America, & European Timezones.  Those folks in Asia, Australia, & the Middle East who can’t make the live large group meetings, are welcome to watch the recorded talk, while still participating in their small group meetings and other live sessions.

What technology platforms will we use for this retreat?

The live video interactions will all be powered by Zoom.us. Primary communication about the retreat will happen through E-mail, while peer-led practice and additional learning material will be accessed through the Mindfulness Retreats Network.

Do I have to lead a peer-led practice session?

No, you don’t have to lead anything, but all participants will be asked if they’d like to host at least one peer-led group session during the retreat.  

Can I continue to work during this retreat?

You can work during this retreat as long as you’re able to attend most all of the live group sessions–your small group meeting and large meeting–each day.  If you are using this retreat to fulfill the prerequisite for the Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program, you won’t be able to work full-time, as there are additional live practice requirements that require a full-time commitment to the retreat and a commitment to silence throughout the duration of the retreat.

Do I need to attend live sessions on camera?

This retreat will be an intimate experience and you are highly encouraged to attend all sessions on camera. This allows the participants and teachers to sense the learning that is happening in community in a deeper way.

Will sessions be recorded?

We will record & post the daily teachings during the large group community meeting and any guided practice sessions offered by retreat teachers.  No other content will be recorded during this retreat, so as to protect the sense of privacy and growing intimacy of practice.  All participants are also asked to follow the same no recording guideline, in order to participate in this retreat.
